In this case report, we present an elderly gentleman with prominent somatic delusions associated with depressive features. He was diagnosed to have severe depressive episode with mood congruent psychotic symptoms and was resistant to both pharmacological and psychological intervention.There was a differential diagnosis of delusional disorder, somatic subtype, resulting in a secondary depressive episode in view of his persistent somatic delusions which appeared more distressing and more prominent than his mood symptoms. Chronologically, his depressive symptoms had been there first, followed by more and more somatic complaints therefore he was concluded to have treatment resistant depression. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) was started with significant improvement especially for his hypochondriacal delusions. However, the ECT was complicated by recurrent febrile reaction which had close temporal relationship with each ECT session but was noted to be benign in nature. This patient has reminded us that psychotic depression is common in the elderly and may have atypical presentation. ECT is an effective treatment option for those resistant to pharmacological and psychological intervention. It has resulted in a fast and complete recovery for hypochondriacal delusion. Febrile reactions might be associated with ECT and it is important to rule out other causes.

Background: Depression and anxiety are two of the most commonly experienced psychological disorders of cancer patients. They are associated with unique psychophysiological side effects that importantly encompass poorer treatment outcomes, increased periods of hospitalization and higher mortality rates. This problem was not well studied in Ethiopia. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of anxiety, depression and associated factors among cancer patients in Gondar University Hospital.

Depression as one kind of neuropsychiatric disorder affects tons of population in the world and exerts great economic and social burden. Great efforts have been made during the past decades aiming to decipher the underlying mechanism of this mental disease. Different kinds of mechanisms underlie depression, among which malfunctions in the olfactory system is one important reason. The occurrence of depression has a close association with dysfunctions in the olfactory system, which is highlighted by some brain regions responsible for depression overlapping with areas playing crucial roles in olfaction. The close relationship between olfactory malfunctions and depression is also underscored by the evidence that some patients with depression exhibited a higher probability of odor identification impairment and a reduced olfactory sensitivity as well as smaller olfactory bulb volumes. For reasons of concise and clarity,in the current review we only briefly summarized some key recent studies pertaining to the relationship between the dysfunctional olfaction and depression, to underscore potentially crucial roles of the normal olfactory system function in ameliorating the probability of the occurrence of depression.
